- 1735: Pluto moved inside the orbit of the planet Neptune for the last time before the 20th It would do it again in 1979.
- 1740: Jews are forces from Little Russia.
- 1750: The town of Halifax, Nova Scotia is almost completely burned to the ground by fire.
- 1789: France’s Finance Minister, Jacques Necker, is dismissed. This act sparks the Storming of the Bastille.
- 1796: Under terms of the Jay Treaty, the U.S takes possession of Detroit from Great Britain.
- 1798: The U.S Marine Corps are re-established. After the American Revolutionary War they had been temporarily disbanded.
- 1801: Jean-Louis Pons – a French astronomer-discovers his first comet. Over the next almost 30-years, he would discover over 35 comets – more than any other astronomer in history.
- 1804: Alexander Hamilton is mortally wounded by U.S. Vice-President Aaron Burr during a duel.
- 1864: Confederate troops try to invade the city of Washington, D.C at the Battle of Fort Stevens during the American Civil War.
- 1889: Tijuana in Mexico is officially founded.
- 1940: The Vichy France regime is founded during World War 2. Philippe Pétain is named Prime Minister of France.
- 1943: At the Allied Invasion of Sicily during World War 2, Italian and German forces attempt a counter attack.
- 1960: The novel “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee is published for the first time in the U.S on this date.
- 1991: Over 260 people are killed when Nigeria Airways Flight 2120 crashes in Saudi Arabia.
- 2006: 209 people are killed during the Mumbai Train Bombings in India.
- 2010: Over 70 people are killed in a double suicide bombing in Kampala, Uganda.
