Day Of The Institutions

Day of the Institutions is both a public and a regional holiday in Spain, and it’s observed annually on the 28th of July. Also known as the Day of the Cantabrian Institutions, this holiday commemorates the constitution of the Province of Cantabria on July 28, 1778.

This is a holiday that’s observed with a lot of different events such as sporting competitions, communal meals, and both private and public celebrations. Because this day is a public regional holiday, non-essential government buildings are closed, as are many banks and businesses. It’s also a day to hoist the flag of Cantabria high above the province.

The History Of Day Of The Institutions

Cantabria is both a province and an autonomous community that’s located in Spain. It received its constitution on July 28, 1778, and it was ratified by Charles III of Spain on November 22, 1779. Originally, this area was just a province, but on December 30, 1981, a law was passed that established the area as an autonomous community of Spain.

It officially became an autonomous community on January 11, 1982. This province and autonomous community are bordered by other Spanish autonomous communities including Asturia, Basque Country, and Castile and Leon.

Day of the Institutions didn’t become an official holiday in this province until the early 1990s. On October 4th, 1993, to be more exact. That is when the regional deputy and mayor of Reocin proposed declaring the 28th of July as the Day of the Cantabrian Institutions. His name was Jose Manuel Becerril and his proposal was approved by a unanimous vote.

Observing Day Of The Institutions

Because this is a public regional holiday, some businesses, banks, and non-essential government offices are closed in Cantabria, but not in the rest of Spain. In this province, people raise the flag of Cantabria, attend sporting events and enjoy communal meals with members of their community. If this holiday falls on a Sunday, then the holiday may be moved to a Monday.
