Day Of The Macedonian Revolutionary Struggle
In North Macedonia, the 23rd of October is observed as a national holiday that’s aptly known as the Day Of The Macedonian Revolutionary Struggle. This holiday marks the creation of the IMRO, or the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization on October 23rd, 1893 in Thessaloniki.

The History Of Day Of The Macedonian Revolutionary Struggle
For over five hundred years, North Macedonia was a part of the Ottoman Empire and it was during the 19th century when Bulgaria decided to become an independent country. This sparked a feeling of nationalism all across the western part of the Ottoman Empire, and in Macedonia, several different resistance groups emerged to oppose Ottoman rule.
On October 23rd, 1893 in Thessaloniki, a small band of revolutionaries was formed. They would form the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization—an organization that would use guerrilla tactics against the Empire in 1896.
In 1903, the town of Krushevo was liberated for approximately 10-days before the Ottomans took the town back. Although this action was a failure, the IMRO continued its armed struggle for years, even after the Ottoman Empire had already fallen. This was all to create a Macedonia state.

The main festival is held at the Macedonian Opera and Ballet in North Macedonia. At this festival, there are usually speeches given by historians and national figures. There are also usually special events at the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts. All across the country, people have the day off and attend concerts, parades, and sporting events.
