Independence Day in Guyana

Independence Day is a national holiday in Guyana that’s observed annually on May 26th. As this holiday’s name implies, it’s used to commemorate the date in 1966 when the country gained independence. Although this day is the day on which the country gained independence, it’s not the day that the country became a republic.

That would happen on February 23, 1970, and that day is considered to be Guyana’s National Day. Regardless, on this day people fly the flag of Guyana, sing the national anthem, and take part in activities that happen all across the country. It’s another reason for food, family, and fun.

The History Of Independence Day In Guyana

Before the period of colonization, the area that is now Guyana was populated by nine different indigenous tribes that are known as the Amerindians nowadays. Then the Dutch became the first Europeans to begin colonizing the country in the 17th century. After that initial period, parts of the area also became occupied by British and French colonists as well.

At the end of the 18th century, the British assumed control over the Dutch colonies. Although the Netherlands briefly gained control of these colonies a little bit later, the Anglo-Dutch Treaty would return them to the UK in 1814. They became known as British Guiana in 1831.

After World War II, various political parties and trade unions emerged, and with them came renewed calls for independence. In 1953, a new constitution was pronounced, and with it came new elections. Eventually, Guyana would gain independence from the UK on May 26, 1966, and the rest is history.
