On December 19th of 2000, the United Nations General Assembly declared September 16th to be designated as International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer. However, this was only the official declaration of this holiday and this day has actually been proclaimed as far back as 1994. The holiday commemorated the signing of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer that was signed back on September 16, 1987.
