Liberation Day In Uganda, also known as NRM Liberation Day, is a holiday that’s observed annually on the 26th of January. This holiday marks the day in 1986 when the previous government was overthrown by the National Resistance Movement (NRM).

The History Of Liberation Day In Uganda
In October of 1962, Uganda gained its independence after having been a British Protectorate for 68-years. A year later, it would become a republic. Over the next few years, things were pretty turbulent in Uganda and the nation would eventually come under the rule of dictator Idi Amin.
In 1981, President Obote would replace Amin, and a former Military Commission member named Museveni would end up forming the National Resistance Army. The purpose of this organization was to overthrow the government, but it didn’t get a chance to accomplish this goal as President Obote was overthrown in 1985 during a military coup. The NRA would take control of Kampala and would then install Yoweri Museveni as the President of Uganda on January 26, 1986.
