Make Cut-Out Snowflakes Day

All over the world children make snowflakes by cutting them out of paper. It’s a fun and educational way for children to get into the holiday spirit. It also gives parents a great memento of their child’s artistic expression.

All of these paper snowflakes end up decorating classrooms, school hallways, and sometimes even people’s homes. This is a timeless tradition that’s been observed for a very long time, and now it’s being celebrated with its own holiday.

A holiday known as Make Cut-Out Snowflakes Day and is observed annually every year on December 27th. This is the perfect time of the year because many kids are home for winter break, so they’re definitely going to need a project to keep them busy.

The History Of Make Cut-Out Snowflakes Day

Making cut-out snowflakes can be traced back to the ancient Japanese practice of origami. During the 17th century, this practice began to be used to make paper snowflakes. Sometime during the 19th century in the U.S, children in schools began to make cut-out snowflakes and this practice has continued ever since.

Unfortunately, we’re unsure of exactly when this holiday was created, although we believe that it’s only been around for the past few years. At first, we were confused as to why Make Cut-Out Snowflakes Day was placed on the calendar after Christmas.

After all, most classrooms begin making them earlier in December. Then we realized that it was placed on the calendar during winter break and it was probably a holiday created by a parent to keep their child busy during this time.

Facts About Snowflakes

Okay, we know that we’re cheating a little bit here listing facts about “real” snowflakes instead of paper snowflakes, but there really isn’t that much to say about cut-out snowflakes, so we thought that we’d entertain everyone with some facts about real snowflakes.

  • The shape of a snowflake will be determined by humidity and temperature.
  • A snowflake will fall at a rate of approximately 4-miles per hour.
  • If a snowflake has a chance to build many layers, it actually appears to have a blue tint.
