Moshoeshoe’s Birthday
Observed annually on March 11th, Moshoeshoe Day is a public holiday in Lesotho. This holiday commemorates the first king of Lesotho, Moshoeshoe I, and is placed on the anniversary of his death in 1870. The reason why this holiday isn’t celebrated on this king’s birthday and is instead celebrated on the day of his death is that few people can agree on when he was born exactly.
Although most people will agree that he was born sometime in 1786, no only really knows the date of his birth. Moshoeshoe I died on March 11, 1870, and the holiday celebrating him has been observed since.
