National Eat A Peach Day
Peaches are just one of those fruits capable of stirring up positive emotions in anyone who eats them. They’re sweet and soft, have a fragrant smell, and can be eaten by themselves or incorporated into various dishes. They also happen to be chock-full of vitamins and minerals.
The average peach contains approximately 16% of the daily value of Vitamin C, 9% of the daily value of Vitamin A, and 8% DV of potassium. It’s also a good source of magnesium and iron.
And all that nutrition is found in a fruit that only contains 59 calories. No wonder people across the U.S., and maybe even the world, celebrate this fruit on National Eat a Peach Day, a holiday observed annually on August 22nd.
The History of National Eat a Peach Day
It’s believed that the peach probably originated in China and then spread through Asia to the Mediterranean over a few hundred years. It would then spread across Europe, and by the 17th century, it could even be found in Mexico, thanks to its introduction to the country by Spanish explorers.
In the United States, large-scale commercial peach operations didn’t begin until the 19th century. Over the years, thousands of peach varieties have been developed, including the Arctic Supreme, Desert Gold, Dixie Red, Golden Jubilee, and Harmony.
Who invented National Eat a Peach Day? We’re not exactly sure, as we can’t seem to find out who invented the holiday, where it was invented, or when it was invented. We’ll continue to research the origins of this holiday, or at least try, and if we find new information about it, we’ll list it here for everyone to enjoy.
