National Grand Marnier Day

National Grand Marnier Day is a holiday that’s observed on the 14th of July and is one that celebrates this liqueur. Grand Marnier is a Cognac-based and orange-scent spirit that’s was invented over 140+ years ago and is still one that many people still love to this day. It’s a liqueur that can be used in a variety of different drinks such as the Perfect Storm, Cadillac Margarita, El Presidente Cocktail, Cadillac Sidecar, Sangria, Mai Tai, and Between The Sheets. All of these drinks are fantastic when made with Grand Marnier.

The History Of Grand Marnier

Unable to uncover the history of National Grand Marnier, we instead opted to uncover the history of this liqueur instead. Before we began our research for this holiday we didn’t know about Grand Marnier, but now that we know it from top to bottom, we believe it’s a fascinating product that we’re going to have to try.

To understand the full story of this orange liqueur, you have to go back all the way to 1827. This is when Jean-Baptiste Lapostolle started a distillery near Paris, France. To improve his knowledge of distilling, he traveled to the Cognac region of France to learn distillery, and after he did, he then brought back some Cognac to age in his cellars.

In 1876, Lapostolle’s granddaughter Julia married Louis-Alexandre Marnier and just four years later, they released a signature cognac made with a bitter orange from the Caribbean. According to legend, Cesar Ritz came up with the name Grand Marnier. This liqueur would become extremely popular during the La Belle Epoque period of French History. In the U.S., this drink would become extremely popular during the 1980s.
