National Miniature Golf Day is a holiday that’s observed annually on the second Saturday in May. It recognizes a game that many of us have played and goes by a variety of different names such as crazy golf, putt-putt, mini-put, or our personal favorite mini-golf.

This holiday shouldn’t be confused with Miniature Golf Day (notice the lack of the word “National” in the name), which is observed on the 21st of September. What’s the difference between the two holidays? Well, to be honest, there’s really not a difference other than they’re celebrated on different days of the year. That really shouldn’t matter but deserves to be mentioned.

The History Of National Miniature Golf Day

As we probably said in the other holiday dedicated to this holiday, miniature golf was invented during the 19th century as a way to “allow” women to play golf in Victorian England. At the time, it wasn’t considered proper for women to play golf, so this game was invented.

Why wasn’t golf considered “lady-like?” Well, because it was considered to be uncouth for women to raise a golf club above shoulder level. Hey, we didn’t invent these rules, we’re just letting people know why they’re there. With that said, that’s why miniature golf ended up getting invented.

What we don’t know is who invented this holiday. We do know that miniature golf spread across the United States after World War I and continued to be popular from the 1930s to the 1980s, with some of its popularity waning during the 1990s and early 2000s.

We think this holiday may have begun with the resurgence of miniature golf during the 2010s, but we’re currently unsure of whether or not that is actually the case. We think we’ll just try to continue to research the origins of this holiday and see if we can find anything else out about this holiday. We’ll let you know.
