Proms officially began during the 19th century as promenades. A promenade is a formal event and allows students to wear the latest fashions while “parading” around their peers. It grew in popularity over the years until it was practically an American institution in the 1930s.

Although proms became popular between the 1800s and the 1930s, they were still small celebrations. It wouldn’t be until after World War II that proms would become more elaborate. Then in the 1960s and 1970s, proms began to lose some of their popularity. Proms wouldn’t become popular again until the 1980s and it’s been steadily growing in popularity ever since.
