National Promposal Day

National Promposal Day is a holiday that’s observed on March 11th every year and is designed to encourage people to get creative with their promposal. What’s a promposal? A promposal is an elaborate way for one person to ask another person to go to the prom with them. Students are also encouraged to spread pictures of their formalwear on social media on this day as well so that everyone in the world can see what they’re wearing to the prom.

The History Of National Promposal Day

As a reaction to the decline of the prom and formalwear business, Men’s Wearhouse invented this holiday on March 16, 2016, via a press release. After all, the promposal is something that students have been doing since at least 2000, so it’s a good idea to encourage people to celebrate it with an actual holiday declaration.

A Brief History Of Proms

Proms officially began during the 19th century as promenades. A promenade is a formal event and allows students to wear the latest fashions while “parading” around their peers. It grew in popularity over the years until it was practically an American institution in the 1930s.

Although proms became popular between the 1800s and the 1930s, they were still small celebrations. It wouldn’t be until after World War II that proms would become more elaborate. Then in the 1960s and 1970s, proms began to lose some of their popularity. Proms wouldn’t become popular again until the 1980s and it’s been steadily growing in popularity ever since.
