Republic Implantation Day, also known as Republic Day, is a holiday in Portugal that’s observed annually on the 5th of October. This holiday commemorates the creation of the Portuguese Republic in 1910 when the House of Braganca was overthrown.
Portugal (National holiday)Because this is a public holiday in Portugal, it’s a day off for the general public, and non-essential government offices, schools, and businesses are closed for the day. If this holiday happens to fall on a weekend instead of a weekday, then it’s automatically moved to the following Monday so everyone can have an opportunity to have the day off.
The History Of Republic Implantation Day In Portugal
On October 5, 1910, the House of Braganca, the ruling monarchy in Portugal since the 11th century, was overthrown in a revolution. A French-type republic was put into place after the king had been overthrown. This first republic lasted for approximately 16 years before it ended with a coup d’etat on May 28, 1926.
After the coup, the National Dictatorship was placed into effect in the country and this was followed by the New State regime of Antonio de Oliveira Salazar. This would prove to be one of the longest authoritarian regimes in all of Western Europe.
In 2011, this holiday was temporarily suspended due to budget cuts in Portugal. Although this suspension of the holiday was supposed to last until 2019, it was reintroduced as a holiday in 2016. It’s been observed as a public holiday in Portugal ever since.

All across Portugal, this holiday is observed with concerts, cultural festivals, and parades. It’s also a day for people to kick back and relax, or to attend one of the many events that happen around the country. And it’s also a day for food with Portuguese dishes such as Caldo Verde, Ameijoas a Bulhao Pato, and Feijoada Trasmontana taking center stage.
