The removal of Dom Pedro II, Brazil’s second Emperor, occurred on the 15th of November, hence why this day is celebrated on this day. Its significance dates back to the time when the king of Portugals son, Dom Pedro I declared himself king of Brazil. After his son took the throne at 5 years old, it wasn’t long before there was unrest after the number of failings throughout his rule.
The economy was in turmoil, people did not trust the emperor and there were calls for abolition that led to an underground movement taking action. A free republic was then formed was he was overthrown.
There was no bloodshed during the coup, but when the proclamation of the republic was then announced in the capital, Brazil entered a new age without a monarchy, with a republican government guiding them.
